Officially began to receive patients in July 1998, Metabolic Diseases Hospital of Tianjin Medical University, also known as Tianjin metabolic disease control center, is the first university specialized hospital with integrated prevention, treatment scientific research and education. With a building area of 12,000 square meters, the hospital has 241 beds and is able to receive 2500 out-patients per day. In 2004, Metabolic Diseases Hospital merged with the Tianjin Institute of Endocrinology established in 1978. The first president of this institute was Professor Zhu Xianyi, who is also the pioneer of endocrine studies in China and the founder of Tianjin Medical University. The Institute has a key laboratory of hormone and development approved by Ministry of Health. The discipline of Endocrine and metabolic disease is a national key discipline of “211 project”.
In order to meet the medical demands of patients and to achieve sustainable development, the hospital starts its relocation projects in Beichen District. The new hospital has a building area of 120,000 square meters with 1200 beds. It will build a comprehensive Grade three level-A university hospital combining clinical treatment center with scientific research and development center and educational training center.
